Pregnancy Massage - is it safe?

April 20, 2017

Pregnancy Massage helps you and your baby keep optimum health during pregnancy. It is important when considering pregnancy massage that you ensure that your therapist is properly trained and qualified in this specialist area. At Mamas Retreat we have undergone extensive training in pregnancy and birthwork, so rest assured, you are in safe hands. During your first trimester your body is going through so many changes to make way for your growing baby. Pregnancy massage is perfectly safe and can offer many benefits. It is a fantastic way for you to relax and send happy vibes to your growing baby. Massage can soothe pain from back and shoulders, cramps, sore hips and aching legs.  It can also prepare your body for the labour to come. By increasing blood and lymph circulation within your body, pregnancy massage can help keep your baby healthy. Reduction in swelling and fluid retention also helps to improve your energy levels, making you feel less fatigued. Improved circulation brings more oxygen and nutrients to the cells in your body and also that of your baby – nourishing the both of you. Receiving pregnancy massage also gives you the time and space to deeply relax and enjoy time with your baby. Feeling good about yourself is very important, especially when it gets to the later stages of pregnancy. Pregnancy massage increases dopamine and serotonin levels resulting in reduced stress, anxiety and depression. Massage also helps you to sleep better resulting in better mood and a greater feeling of wellbeing. When pregnant avoid treatments that involve heat (steam rooms, saunas and spa baths). This also includes body wraps, mud baths, mineral baths or anything which raises your body temperature abnormally high. Avoid having a pregnancy massage if your LMC (Lead Medical Carer) has advised against it, or if you have high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia. If none of these apply, just sit back relax and be pampered by us at Mamas Retreat. Relish the quiet moments to yourself before your new baby arrives.
